Meditation Studio – part 2
This is part 2 of a design for a simple freestanding meditation and yoga studio. In this post, I want to show in more detail how the building is arranged.
The building is based on a 4′ x 4′ module grid, ideal for its post and beam structure.
The 3×4 practice area is defined.
The raised floor plane and walls to the practice area are added. The double opening will provide views and access to the garden. The single opening will be the main entrance to the practice area.
The covered walkways and covered outdoor area are defined.
Walls are added to the edge of the walkways. A wall has also been added to enclose the 2×6 garden space.
Rafters that will hold the roof are added. This shows the hierarchy of spaces – the most important space, the practice area, has the highest roof.
The complete building. The varying heights of the roof illustrate the hierarchy of spaces within the building. The path from open and public to closed and private can also been seen.

This is awesome. I always thought about buildings just looking cool, but this is a true form follows funtion. The wall as a barrier between the meditator and what is probably I-95 on the opposite side. Clean lines of the studio to keep from distracting. The garden as and aide to tranquility and peace and the opening that looks upon it. By making the main reference to the garden and the entrance ‘on the side’, people who are meditating will not be disturbed when someone comes in or out. Could you make an alley way inside so that the sound of the door is removed from the main mediation room?
I just realized, even the entrance being hidden behind the wall is ingenious. It means that a person coming off the street has a transition period between life and the quiet comteplation of the meditation room. And the same goes in reverse, when leaving they aren’t hit by the real world right away, but have time to slowly acquaint themselves with the noise and the harshness of light.
