Meditation Studio – part 1
This is a design for a simple meditation and yoga studio. The goal is to create a series of layers and separations between the user of the space and the world around them that will minimize distractions during practice
In this massing model (above), the green represents the inner practice area. This area is surrounded by a covered walkway (blue), which connects to a private outdoor space (purple).
The building is based on a 4′ x 4′ module grid, ideal for its post and beam structure. In these first sketches, the practice area is 2×3 modules, or 8′ x 12′. The entry walkway and the walkway that separates the practice area from the private garden are 4′ wide. There is a wider covered outdoor area that can be used to for outdoor practice. The 8′ x 12′ practice area seemed a bit small, so in the next iteration, I expanded it by one module in each direction, keeping all of the other elements the same size.
Now the inner practice area is 3×4 modules or 12′ x 16′. I also moved the location of the entrance to face the larger covered outdoor space. This requires the user to walk along the covered path and turn a corner before entering the practice area. Along this path, the walls become higher and less open to the outside (this can be seen in the axonometric sketch above). Both of these design moves help create a sense of separation between the user and the outside world.
In the final iteration, the practice area has large glass doors that face into the walled garden. This allows for fresh air, light and views, without distractions.
