FreeGreen Competition, part 1
I’ve entered a design competition called, “Who’s Next 2.0″ by “Free Green”. I want to use this competition as a way of outlining my design process through a series of posts. My first step in any design is to understand the program. The competition calls for the design of a lakeside retreat for a fictional retired couple. The submission requirement is 9 images/boards, sized for the web. The program calls for:
-It must be less than 1,600 sqft.
-There has to be a master bedroom for the couple and a guest bedroom
-The husband requires a Study/Library, and the wife requires an Art Studio
-The design should integrate nature and incorporate some green building concepts.
Next, I want to think about a few design concepts that I want to include in my project. These concepts can come from a number of places. In this case, the first idea of ‘Sheltered View’ comes from how I think the site should influence the building. On this site, there is a strong directional view and a need for privacy.
Sheltered View. I want the building to wrap around the inhabitants while at the same time focusing views toward the lake and obscuring views of other properties.
The next two concepts are general green building principals. Since this competition is for a summer retreat, I have chosen two green building concepts that aid in passive cooling.
Passive Cooling. The building catches breezes from the lake while operable skylights vent the warm air out through the roof.
Passive Shading. An overhang protects the interior from direct summer sun which could overheat the building. The overhang allows the lower winter sun to penetrate into the building, providing light and heat.
The final concept is site driven, like the first example.
Tred Lightly. The building should be designed in such a way as to not interfere with water flow and runoff to the lake. It should tread lightly on the land.
