FreeGreen Competition, part 2
This is part 2 in a series following my design for a design competition that calls for the design of a lake side cabin retreat.
Part 1 started with diagrams of design concepts. This post includes 2 additional diagrams that will drive the shape of the cabin.
Public vs. Private. The communal areas, such as the living room and kitchen are separated from the private areas, including the bedrooms and library. In this design, I’ve placed the building’s core in between the public and private areas to act as an additional buffer. The core is the area that houses the majority of the plumbing and mechanical systems. Keeping these items close will reduce the cost of plumbing lines. This core also contains the more robust structure that will support the second floor. Placing the heavy structure in one area allows the public areas to be more open.
The idea of a sheltered view was shown in part 1. This diagram continues that design idea, this time the diagram is constructed horizontally in plan view, as opposed to being shown vertically in section as in part 1.
These quick and messy sketches show my first attempts at laying out the actual rooms. This step is much like figuring out a puzzle – the rooms have to all fit together just so and the whole building can not exceed the maximum square footage. The design will become more and more refined during this process as sizes and relationships between spaces are figured out.
These sketches show a number of possible configurations of the core area.
Finally, a layout comes together. The plan follows the first diagram – public rooms on one side, private rooms on the other with the core in the middle. The sizes of the rooms and the relationship between the rooms has been figured out and doors have been added to the rooms.
The Art Studio and a guest room will be placed on the second floor. This second floor will hang over the both the front and rear of the lower level, proving a covered entrance and some shade for the decking below. The bathroom on the second floor aligns with the bathrooms on the first floor.

[...] Part 2 followed the design from sketches into a resolved freehand drawing of the plan of the cabin. The next step is to take the sketch into the computer and to start really drafting all of the elements to scale to make sure they really fit together. [...]
