FreeGreen Competition, part 5

This is part 5 in a series following my design for a design competition that calls for the design of a lake side cabin retreat.

Part 4 showed the complete building in 3D for the first time. It seemed at first glance that the design had been resolved. But, after a more careful review of the initial design concepts from the first post, the concept of Passive Shading had been lost during the design process.

To solve this issue, I extended the first floor roof so it cantilevered over the narrow part of the deck, facing the lake.  This 4′ extension provides enough of an overhang to prevent direct sunlight from entering the cabin.

Though it may seem like a minor change in the design, the implications to the energy costs for cooling the building are quite significant.

Now that the design is reasonably resolved, I can begin laying out the drawings for their final presentation.

This is beautiful, I will take one of those please.
What about punching down the right wall and making it into a driveway? At this point, not sure where you would park your car that wouldn’t ruin the view of the windows. But by putting it where the wall is, then the car would be cooled by I guess is a tree that is enveloped by the building. The loss of a wall could increase your cooling costs, but that also depends on what axis the house is facing. If the wall is not a east-west axis, then direct sunlight would not hit the house except for when the sun is directly above.
