mini laptop desk

This is a design for a small desk. The goal was to make the desk as small as possible, while still remaining functional. This desk is 24″ wide and 18″ deep – an ideal size to tuck away in a studio apartment. The desk is usable because the desk surface slides out and locks into position,  making it large enough to hold a laptop. The higher back area conceals cords and a power strip, keeping the clutter under control. This higher area also conceals the gap left when the desktop is fully extended.

This rendering shows the desk in its closed position.

Here we see the desktop in the extended position, ready for work.

Finally, we can see into the back area where the power strip and cords are concealed.

Some ideas for improving the design:

-The upper back area is too large for just concealing power cords. If it had additional storage, the size could be justified.

-The initial sketches showed the sliding desktop shifted over to one side, which gives more room on the side for a book, or other items to remain. I think incorporating that shifted desktop would make the desk more usable.

-The addition of a small lower shelf could possibly hold a printer.

-The top back could incorporate a lamp or be more varied in shape.

I’ll give the design another pass and I’ll post the next iteration to the site. Let me know what you think.
